Never Let anyone intimidate you. Degreed musicians don't know it all, and you'll find out that many of them can't do what you do naturally on a bad day. Don't get me wrong-I'm all for education and if you can take a class (credit or audit), or go to a intensive workshop then do it.
Matter of fact you may actually know more than you think you do. If you want to belong to an organization-make sure it is one that can do something for you. If the National Association of Negro Musicians can help you be the musician you may want to become then join-if not-then don't. Everybody out here is looking for more money and these organizations are no different, but if you pay the cost, you want more than a title.
Now I've had a friend that have sung in the Thurston Frazier Chorale, and though he is a degreed musician, He's very down to earth. I'm sure there are musicians who are stuck on their degrees-God Bless'em, but that's not everyone.
Leviticus I don't have any type of degree in music, but I can serve the Lord and others anyway. I take a class, read a book, attend a workshop whenever I can, each time I do this I become just as educated as the others are. Matter of fact it's the degreed musicians who often are teaching me.
Say to yourself that you are capable and confident enough to stand among anyone rather degreed or not. Your gifts and integrity will take you a long way and God will fill the rest out if you trust Him to take the lead.

: I was recently on the web site for the
: National Association for Negro Musicians,
: and was truly inspired and lifted to read
: the stories and obits of the members of this
: organization. It seems that everybody is
: college educated and have attained a lot of
: accolades. I used to entertain thoughts of
: joining this organization, but feel that I
: may be considered not of their caliber. I
: don't want to judge them since I've never
: been to any of their meetings or events, but
: I would hope that if I tried to join them I
: wouldn't be snubbed or put down for not
: being degreed and accomplished as they are.
: Don't get me wrong I like classical music
: along with Negro spirituals and anthmns, but
: I feel like I would be intimidated and a
: outsider. That is also, by the way, why I
: never went to the Thurston Farzier Chorale
: at the GMWA. Has anybody on the board had
: any experience with this group and what was
: your take on how them.
