I have heard of this before. The cam position sensor sits on the top of the cam cover, near the back of the engine on the passenger's side. (above the intake cam) It is held in place with a bolt with a (I think)10mm head. Evidently Mazda had some of these that went bad from the heat of the engine. They seem to work Ok when cool, but give trouble when hot. After a while they quit working and let you set.
Sometimes the crank position sensor on the front of the engine will do this, but my bet is on the Cam position sensor. Sorry I didn't see this sooner.
