Posted by June Dobson on 8/2/2006, 5:09 am, in reply to "Re: Boy and Barrel, Wakefield" Thank you so much for the information you supplied. I really appreciate it. A relative of my husband's apparently managed the Pub at some stage, hence my interest. I got some information from the Wakefield Local Studies Librarian, (which you may already have) which reads:- We also found out that one Edwin Dobson occupied the premises from 1881 to 1897. Unfortunately, any family members that may have been able to give us more information on our connection to the pub, are now no longer with us. Its always the way isn't it? Thanks again Geoff.

Hi again Geoff
"The inn appears in local trade directories from the end of the 18th century until 1898 when it was demolished. It was situated in the Market Place later known as the Bullring. By 1897 the owners wished to demolish and rebuild, but in the following year Wakefield Corporation decided to purchase the site in order to carry out improvements, so the new partially-built inn was finally demolished. There is a newspaper cutting available which gives more detail about this.
Henry Clarkson in his book "Memories of merrie Wakefield " (2nd ed 1889) remembers the pillory which was situated next to the pub. Rod Kaye in his little book on pub history mentions that the landlord in 1871 Henry Jepson was summoned before the local Board of Health for not allowing his urinal to be properly screened! Mr Kaye may be able to help you further as he has been carrying out extensive research on pub history in the area over the past few years. I am not aware that he has an email address but his postal address is: 8 Linton Ave, Healey, Batley, West Yorkshire WF17 7HB
The illustration is a drawing by Henry Clarke, surgeon of Wakefield prison from 1876. His volume of drawings dating probably from the 1890s was bequeathed to Wakefield Corporation. They were reprinted in a limited edition book published by Wakefield Historical Publications in 1977 (which we were allowed to digitise for the Twixt Aire and Calder website). At some point the drawings were bound in with Clarkson's Memories (see above) and again reprinted by WHP in 1985.
Kind regards
June
