Posted by Geoff on 8/2/2006, 3:36 pm, in reply to "Re: Boy and Barrel, Wakefield" Many thanks for your return information I did not have it and it is therefore a really good find. From the information you supplied I was able to find the Boy & Barrel on the 1861 Census when the Innkeeper was a William Jepson (not Henry unless he happened to be Wm Henry?)aged 50 born in Hunslet, with his wife Mary Ann also aged 50 born Dewsbury and their children Joe aged 23 an upholsterer and Hannah 18 and one servant. I went back to 1851 without success as William Jepson was in Hunslet and not an Innkeeper so I have yet to find the Pub on the 1851 Census. On the 1871 Census it is clearly marked and William is still the Innkeeper with his wife and now three servants. The Boy & Barrel was next door to the Strafford Arms on this Census so it is firmly placed in the Bullring or very nearby known then as Market Place. I cannot find the Boy & Barrel on the 1881 Census (yet) as dear old William was living in Ivy Cottage, Leeds Rd Alverthorp with his wife and grandson Herbert Rhodes aged 7. William is seen here as a Retired Publican. I have found the Strafford Arms on each Census but not the Boy & Barrel other than above but I could have missed it so I will keep looking as I would expect to find it on the 1841, 1851 1881 & 1891 unless it was un-occupied at the time? I will write to Mr Kay and check out the website that you suggested as I would love to see an illustration of the pub. I grew up in Wakefield so it is fun looking at the old streets and places, are you from the Area too? Cheers Geoff

Hi June,
Thanks again for your help, and please let me know if you find any further info it has become a little project to find more about this pub even though it is not a vital part of my family history research. My direct E-mail address is GeoffWalkerCA@aol.com if you want to contact me direct, Oh by the way you are no relation to an Alan Dobson Eastmoor Wakefield? As it is a small world and getting smaller!
