I've just discovered that my great-great-grandfather listed his occupation as a 'beer retailer' in the 1861 census. The address was Claremont Terrace [in or near Durham Street), Bethnal Green, London, and it seems that he ran or worked in a pub called "Noah's Ark" - one of his daughters was listed as a barmaid at that address in the same census.
