This subject is mentioned in the latest PHS newsletter. The Salisbury at 90 St Martins Lane was certainly called the Salisbury Stores. There were also a couple of other "Stores" in the area, the Swiss Stores, on the site of Leicester Square Underground Station and the Cambrian Stores in Castle St (now Charing Cross Road) where Wyndhams Theatre now stands.
In researching the pubs in this are we never found any explanation for the name but presumably they were shops with an "on" licence.
Incidentally, the Salisbury was previously the Coach and Horses and was owned by Ben Caunt the boxer, while the Cambrian Stores was owned by one of his opponents, Nathaniel Langham.
