PENNY WET 143,High St West WALLSEND
My Grandfather David Ryan was manager of the Station Hotel the "Penny Wet" during the second world war and from 1937 until 1950. The ground floor entering from Station Road comprised two front rooms on the right and the bar on the left. To the rear was the back Buffet and then a Smoke Room. Above the front rooms was a lounge on the first floor and a Club to the rear. Above that on the second floor was the Manager's accommodation. My grandmother often mentioned that they sold Newcastle Ales so quickly during the War years you would think that they were giving it away. The demand was so great that occassionally they would run out for up to two days before the next delivery.
