I posted a message to you yesterday and today the message below came from Stockport Library, hope it helps
1828 "the old established and well accustomed public house known by the sign of the Ball in Middle Hillgate" was to let, with brewing utensils. Joseph Sykes was tenant in 1831 and William Higginbottom in 1833. In 1842 Higginbottom left and the house was advertised: "The outbuildings embrace brewhouse and utensils in fine working condition, malt chamber . . ." William Clegg was the tenant in December 1842 when the property was sold. The home brewing continued erratically for a few years and then the Golden Ball became the property of Henry Smith, Waterloo Brewery. The pub closed in December 1915. It changed its name to the Market Hotel about 1910.
