I was born in july 1928 at the Blue Monkey. My grandfather James Alger owned the Inn. He had two sons Stanley and leslie. My mother Ethel Alger was married to stanley, and we lived in the east wing of the pub, where she opened a small grocery/sweet shop. The west wing had a large extension that was used as an assembly room but mostly as a meeting place for the Buffs, ofwhich my father was a promonent member.
As a youngster I was seldom allowed in the bar, except before opening hours. But I do remember the enormously long bar, which I believe was the longest in the county, arguably the country.I went to the local school and sang in the church choir [of sir Francis Drake fame].
My parents separated in 1940 and we moved to Plymouth. Shortly after, my Grandfather sold the pub and they serrled in Bere Alston. There is lots more I can tell you ifyou are interested.
Iwill just say that after many years living overseas, Ireturned with my wife and paid avisit inthe mid 80's. The pub had been sadly neglected, little attempt had been made to modernise it, and I left feeling quite depressed.
So I am not surprised to hear it has now been demolished.
regards
Ches Alger
