Hi Nick,
Just found this site. I am currently researching Newbury pubs and have some information on the Blue Ball (though not a huge amount). The earliest reference I have is from 1830.
Some landlords:
1830 John Rivers
1844 - 1854 Oliver Jeffery
1864 William Barnes
1868 - 1902 Henry Farmer Taylor
1902 - 1916 Harry Herbert Taylor (son of Henry)
1916 - 1949 Mrs Rosina Taylor (widow of Harry)
1950 Herbert Henry Taylor
1963 Reginald Gove
1969 - 1972 Thos C Kirton
It is quite impressive that it has managed to last from 1830 to the present without a name change.
With regards the previous comment that it was originally owned by Blatches - I would be interested to find a source for that. I would not doubt that they owned it or at least had a tie for a time - but did they build it?
I hope to add to this information in time - if you have found out more since you posted this query please contact me. Any chance that you have access to any old deeds?
Phil
