Hi Kat,
Try the Archives Records at Carlisle Castle. They have records of "Alehouse Recognizance Registers" which date from roughly the mid-eighteenth century onwards. These records are grouped into Wards eg Eskdale, then area, eg Brampton.
In my case I found that the house that I live in "Scarrow Hill" was an Inn at that time.
Earlier records from Estates Records (Naworth in my case) proved an even earlier record.
