Many apologies for being so long in replying - I had looked on the site so often without any sort of response being posted that I kind of gave up.
Bill West - a really nice person. I have shaken his hand on more than one occasion. He and Kath lived in Admiral Street in Hertford.
The original posting was for information about the Crown Inn at St. Margarets as my grandfather ran the pub at some time but no-one knew when that was. I have since worked out that it must have been between 1928 and 1932 (approximately). However, any information/photos that you could provide about any area of the Pain/Bird/West family would be very gratefully received. If there is anything you would like help with, then ask away and if I can provide, it's yours.
By the way, which of Bill West's daughters is your mum ? I remember two, although their names escape me at the moment. The name Serena rings a bell however - we might well have met when you were just a little 'un
