Posted by Jim McIntosh It was originally called the “Alma Tavern” but changed its name in the mid 1870’s to the “Volunteer Canteen” and later the “Volunteer Inn”. Closed around 1940 – it was for many years “Sanders Insurance Brokers”. Jim

The building still stands – it’s the building to the left of “The Punch Bowl” – a fun pub opposite the junction of Cavendish Street.
