Indeed he was.
I've heard stories from many drivers who served under him, but one in particular stands out, and, to me, speaks volumes about his dedication not only to his occupation, but to his staff.
In the aftermath of a bomb attack on Smithfield depot, in which 19 buses were destroyed, and 29 were damaged, Mr. Heubeck joined in with the staff the following night as they fitted replacement windows to damaged buses, and generally made attempts to have enough vehicles available for the morning run out.
He treated all the staff present to fish suppers each, and sat with them, chatting, as the food was consumed. Not only that, but as all the staff had to work through the night, he told them all to put in for 10 hours overtime!
Never afraid to get his hands dirty, never afraid to roll his sleeves up, but always, apparently, conscious of how much a good manager could gain from his staff when he treated them well.
And how many company managers would board a bus rumoured to have a bomb on it?
It's a tired cliche, but he was a one-off, and it is highly unlikely we will see a man of his calibre again.
