Hiring independent contractors

I am an OT who owns a very small private practice with a SLP. We are currently brainstorming about hiring independent contractors, but are really uneducated about that business model (i.e. how to pay them? tax issues?). If any one has any experience with that topic please share what you know. Thanks! JEni
