Just like you, I was in the sales field (for the past 10 yrs). I am getting ready to start the entry level masters program at 28 yrs of age. Also, like you, I had considered PT or OT careers since I was younger b/c I had most of the pre-requisites already. I interviewed many OT and PT's with your same question: will the midicaid/midicare caps and reimbursements affect OT? The answer was a resounding "No." Basically, everyone "freaked out" when there was a cap placed on medicare. However, PT's did not get OT's job and not many, only a few percent were cut back to working part time. The cap has been raised and things are back to normal. However, right now is the best time to go into OT b/c admissions in allied health are down (due to this miscommunication) and your more likely to get into that prestigious university of choice. That is what happened to me! I wish you luck in what ever you decide to do. Like you, I had the same questions and I am not regretting my decision. The opportunities for OTs are growing and branching into so many other fields other than just clinical. Im stating this from my family's experience who work for the Dept. of Rehab Svcs and Assitive Technology, as well as lot of OTs and PTs who are my friends. Good luck!
: I am currently in the technology field
: (sales)but have always had a strong interest
: in PT/OT since college, which is beneficial
: since I fulfilled most of the OT
: prerequisites during my undergrad. I am
: seriously considering going back to school
: for my masters in PT or OT at this point in
: my life. Any suggestions or opinions on
: which field has more potential, reward, etc?
: Ex: I have seen some feedback on this site
: that medicare and medicaid dictate much of
: the referrals and OT often loses out to PT.
: Is this a growing concern for the future of
: OT? I am very interested in feedback from
: individuals from all stages, current student
: to experienced professionals.
