First late me state the obvious, the target audience that this is intended for will most likly never read this. Why you ask, simple answer. They are to self absorbed to care about anything as mundane as personal responsibility, community responsibility or most importantly, their own civil rights. They do not read anything that does not pertain to their own self indulgence.
It is truly a shame that we as a community can not support the very rights that so many take for granted. I have been in this fight since 1973, I have never stoped for one reason, because I felt my community with me.
Now that is not the case. I see gay and lesbian 20-40 year olds full of self rightiousness when it comes to them, and shocking ambivilance when it comes to their community. Do you think I am going to carry your rights for you? Do you think I am going to continue to fight for those who could care less?
You are mistaken if you do.
What they fail to understand, is this is not the end, this is only the start. With this victory those who oppose us, the Morman and Catholic Churches, they are going to go local now. They will seek and acheive local control. They will dismantle safe schools and will start next on job discrimination, housing and the elimination of sexual orientation as a hate crime.
And that is just the start.
When they limit, shut down or allow open harasment at the local gay bars what will you do then? Protest? Shout that your rights are being violated, that a bar is more important than being able to marry the person you love....and who will care?
I won't.
If you think for one moment that our foes do not see our weakness as a community to come together in unity over a basic issue of civil rights, you are saddly mistaken.
This is just the start.
And when you need us the most, the us who have been at the front of the line for years...who have indured countless harrasments, verbal assults and more so that you can enjoy the freedom of living openly, will we come?
I would not bet on it.
If we do anything we must first start by taking to our own streets and letting our community know, we either stand as one, or we fall as one. It is as simple as that.
