When I was 2 yrs of age, I lived with my grandmother in a court off PE's Gardner Junction Line, about a mile from Hollywood & La Brea. The Red Cars ran in private Right of Way right past our cottage. My grandmother used to take me and my older brother to the main library downtown via the Hollywood Line, past Echo Park and thru the subway. We always rode the Angels' Flight and had lunch on Bunker Hill before going to the library. We moved from the court about 6 months before the Red Cars stopped running. In 1963 or 1964 I worked for Western Union downtown (7th & Flower) and watched the excavators break into the subway while digging the foundations for the Union Bank Building. About 1993 I took my oldest son with me to LA, and just after dark I found the subway bore. I was very excited and wanted to get a closer look; my son was a bit reluctant. We slipped through the chain link fence and walked down the incline toward the tunnel. When we reached the old substation building, about 30 cigarette lighters, matches and candles appeared inside the tunnel--and immediately spilled out and surged toward us! Needless to say, we turned and raced pell-mell for the safety of our vehicle. I visited the site about 2 years ago, accompanied by my wife, at about 5AM, and things were much quieter: nary a light to be seen. Please don't let them blow it up!
