Posted by Patrick It would be cool if they got it going again. This would be great with these gas prices. --Previous Message--

Wow, that sounds crazy. You guys must have been running so fast to the car.
: When I was 2 yrs of age, I lived with my
: grandmother in a court off PE's Gardner
: Junction Line, about a mile from Hollywood
: & La Brea. The Red Cars ran in private
: Right of Way right past our cottage. My
: grandmother used to take me and my older
: brother to the main library downtown via the
: Hollywood Line, past Echo Park and thru the
: subway. We always rode the Angels' Flight
: and had lunch on Bunker Hill before going to
: the library. We moved from the court about
: 6 months before the Red Cars stopped
: running. In 1963 or 1964 I worked for
: Western Union downtown (7th & Flower)
: and watched the excavators break into the
: subway while digging the foundations for
: the Union Bank Building. About 1993 I took
: my oldest son with me to LA, and just after
: dark I found the subway bore. I was very
: excited and wanted to get a closer look; my
: son was a bit reluctant. We slipped through
: the chain link fence and walked down the
: incline toward the tunnel. When we reached
: the old substation building, about 30
: cigarette lighters, matches and candles
: appeared inside the tunnel--and immediately
: spilled out and surged toward us! Needless
: to say, we turned and raced pell-mell for
: the safety of our vehicle. I visited the
: site about 2 years ago, accompanied by my
: wife, at about 5AM, and things were much
: quieter: nary a light to be seen. Please
: don't let them blow it up!
