I went on that same tour in elementary school! My San Bernardino elementary went to Olvera ca 1992, and I had the same cut-short tour while most of my classmates bought switchblade combs. Yeah, the tour seemed to be in the 'safe' tunnels, with noexplorings of the branchings. There is an official mexican group that hosts traditional events on Olvera St that used to give tours, but some kind of underground fire and an aborted attempt at an underground art gallery nixed the tunnels a few years ago.
