I first rode the L.A. subway in my sophomore year of high school, 1953. My Latin class decided we needed to see the new Roman Empire epic film, "The Robe" that was showing at Grauman's Chinese on Hollywood Blvd. I grabbed the P.E. car in Lynwood and met up with the rest of the guys (It was a non-coed Catholic school.) at the 6th and Main station from where we walked over the the Subway Terminal. We caught the P.E. car there, went through the tunnel and rode out to Hollywood. I can still hear the rattle and clatter, and feel the swaying motion of the cars. In the mid-60s I was living in Echo Park and my young nephews and I loaded up with flashlights and went exploring in the old tunnel. It was fascinating but frustrating to run up against that blank wall half way through.
