since your letter was dated back in 2005, you may not still be looking for info. i need to check this great site more often!
anyway my recollections date from the 50's. as i remember the intersection of temple and glendale blvds: on the nw corner was a standard filling station. ne corner there was a public library with a lot of grass in front. the se corner had a parking lot next to a resturant and the sw corner had a war surplus store=this always caught my eye because the owners had put in front an old diving suit (big and bulky with a large headpiece(can't remember if it was the metal type but think not) anyway they had a "smog suit" sign on it (in those days smog was REALLY bad) and everyone thought it so funny.
the pe ran cars up echo park ave but they came from sunset blvd. the subway was an exciting place for a kid of 10 or so. always remember when going home from downtown how sad i felt when the tunnel curved and daylight was visable ahead.
someone mentioned the tunnel partially finished with boards and not cement but i think they are refering to a ventilation hole around flower street-the boards were probably covering up this hole. i'm 68 and i still have dreams about the great subway. wish I had taken more photos!!! the only ones i have are from after abandoment with the pcc's still inside. i was too scared to go into the tunnel but wished i had.
