Hill Street Tunnels

Does anyone have any stories to tell about life in the hills of old downtown Los Angeles? I have just discovered pictures of the old street car tunnels at Hill and at Broadway. Suddenly there is a big ghost looming over the 101 Freeway in downtown. What was this neighborhood like? Why was it so thoroughly removed?
