Posted by Darrell Urbien I am doing research on a musical instrument maker named Chris Knutsen. He was active in the Echo Park area from c.1914 until his death in 1930. One of his shops was located at 1542 W. Temple, at the corner of Temple and Glendale (which I believe was next to some major rail traffic). It was also just up the line from the Subway tunnel on the way to Park Junction/Angelus Temple. I've done a lot of searching: EPHS, Angelus Temple Archive, LAPL, MTA, Seaver Center, Glendale Public Library, LA Department of Building and Safety, and (soon) AAA Archives.. Does anyone here have a photograph of this intersection? The shop itself would have been located on the SE corner - where the present "Prestige Auto Body" wrecking yard is located. I was hoping someone would've taken a photo or seen some film of a passing PE car (or a passing LARy car rolling down Temple). The photos I have found of the intersection are all facing AWAY from the shop! I've also managed to figure out that some time after 1925, all the buildings on that corner were demolished, and the land bought by the City of Los Angeles. Does anyone here know why? A budding theory I have is perhaps a rail line was being contemplated from Glendale Blvd. North up Echo Park Ave. towards Sunset - maybe around the time of the Tunnel construction? Or, perhaps the city was just contemplating extending Echo Park Ave past Temple to Glendale? The buildings removed are straight in line with what used to be Echo Park Ave South of Bellevue (the part that disappeared when the 101 Freeway was built). Now that stretch of Echo Park Ave is part of the baseball diamond. Does anyone remember what this intersection looked like - anytime from the '20s to the '50s? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! Thanks! Darrell Urbien
