Mike,
I'm responding to your post a few weeks ago.
In the Merck Manual which is a physician's dictionary, panic attack is described and common classes of medicines are listed as effective treatments. In addition, it lists meditation and self hypnosis as very effective non med treatments for SOME people. For you to say that someone else is controlling my mind is absolute bullshit. Self hypnosis and meditation may be prayer for some people, breathing exercises for others, and/or a SELF guided daydream for other people. When you look in the mirror you see the same stuff and feel the same stuff but hopefully you are not as tense. Your classification of hypnosis sounds like you are threatened by it and put it on par with stage shows where people cluck like chickens
. Putting it in the classification as "Alternative Therapy" degrades its importance because a lot of alternative therapy is crap and does nothing but burn a hole in your wallet and disappoint someone who is looking for a cure. A forum such as this should encourage everyone to write what their experience is/was for meds and therapy so everyone can get a sense of direction. Seeing a physiscian first is always the best choice. Next research shows that the combined treatments of cognitive therapy and drug therapy provides the most effective results. In my twenties, I just had one on one cognitive therapy and it worked for me. When my attacks cropped up later in my late twenties, I chose minimal drug therapy that works well for me in addition to a foundation of exercise, diet, and sleep. Group therapy works for some people that need the social support to get through their time of crisis. I dare say that I bet that I take more time to eat right, exercise, and meditate on a daily basis than you take to go to GROUP. I won't denegrate myself by expressing my opinion of group therapy (maybe I will)because if it works for people - Hey that's great but it sounds like that you are still going to group therapy for you "cure". Bottom line is this - Anxiety and panic attacks have many causes and many approaches that work. All opinions should be encouraged and all people should read many message boards on the Internet to get a broad consensus of what seems to work and what doesn't. I hate taking low amounts of medicine but I have something called a LIFE and a FAMILY that I prefer to take the time and engage in. GROUP doesn't work for me. If I want to feel better, I could go to group and whine how crappy I feel and discover that there is a person that is is more f$#@ed up than me and feel better. I prefer to focus on the many positve things in this world even despite the war and economy. I say to everyone that has panic and anxiety - never rely on one person's opinion or path. Read as much as you can and see a professional as soon as possible. You will feel better soon no matter how bad or messed up you feel. Never give up!!!!
