I really thought, way back in the nineties, that the Air Force was worried that the A-10 was very vulnerable to ground fire and shoulder launched ground-to-air missiles and had considered retiring the aircraft. I guess that they decided that the unique capabilities of the plane warranted keeping it in service.
As a Marine grunt (though long ago off active duty), I still miss the A-6 Intruder. With its FLIR and external payload, it was something that you just felt better knowing was on station. The 30mm cannon on the AV-8 B Harrier is no slouch, though.
What I loved in the Gulf was having the Cobras go overhead. They would fly so low that you would swear that the skids were going to hit the antenna on our HMMWV - you could almost touch the aircraft. You could certainly clearly see the pilot's and gunner's faces.

Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.
