They both had minor problems which were well within my ability to fix. While I don't have pictures, i think the plastic is very nice looking with some interesting depth.
I should mention that I'm very picky and find at least something minor wrong or needing adjustment with almost every pen I buy.
1. I don't consider the step substantial, but in any case it doesn't bother me when I write. I tend to hold the pen a little further from the nib than some people do. On one my pens the step was cut a little sharp - a very minor problem. I wrapped the threads in blue tape and knocked a tiny part of the corner off with a metal nail file - problem solved.
2.The feed is plastic. Very few modern feeds are ebonite any more, but I also think it's just about impossible to make a cartridge-converter pen with anything but a molded feed, due to the need for the "tail" to enter the cartridge or converter for ink to flow.
3. Both of mine are fine points, so I can't answer. The fine seem to run to "true fine", not as fat as most modern German made nib pens.
4. I don't understand this question. The only metal on the pen is the nib, the clip, and the cap band. I don't think anything is "painted on"
Now to the other problems on mine. One had some left over plastic at the back of the nipple where the cart/converter attaches. This interrupted the flow. It took only a few minutes to unscrew the nib cup, pull the nib, and clean out the hole with a toothpick. No, shouldn't have happened, but I consider this minor. Fixed now.
Both had a problem of the nib drying out when capped for a few days. There is air space where the clip enters the cap, and this allows a small amount of air to enter the cap. It could be that its just the ink I use, or that fact that I have flow adjusted a little low (intentionally) but it bothered me. I fixed this by stuffing a little bit of beeswax into the space, and using a heat gun for a second to melt it in. It's pretty much invisible, since its under the clip. Problem solved.
Like I said, I'm very picky. You might not notice any of this. On the whole I think they are very nice pens, particularly at the price point.
