He worked for the Getty as a guard during his long retirement. Other than that, our friendship has been exclusively in the writing of letters. I usually write on sheets of paper, but because of his passion for all animals, I sent him notecards illustrated with animals. I still have a small collection in my desk drawer that were reserved for him.
Through our letters, I learned about his contribution to the moon landing. He was a graduate of UCLA. But he never revealed to me the secret work he did while working for military intelligence, and now I will never be able to squeeze it out of him.
He claimed I was the only person he ever regularly wrote to. I didn't believe him, but he did have a rubber stamp made up with my address so he didn't have to bother writing it out each time. And I will not forget him. I have his motherís Parker 51 and will always remember him when I use his gift to write.
