This is a sterling silver safety shut off eyedropper fountain pen with a hand engraved Japanese flying crane design on the cap and barrel done by Ikkou c. 1915-1920. The design begins with a crane flying against a background of cloud shapes. Overlaying the design is a long stem of a rice plant heavy with seeds. Some Japanese cranes eat rice gleanings from the paddy fields in the winter. The artistís signature appears at the bottom of the silver on the barrel. The silver is finished with an acid treatment to give it a matte finish. The cap top is stamped SILVER. The overall design of the pen reflects other pens made by VANCO, though there are no maker's marks. The gold plated cap band and clip have no hallmark. The nib is a very firm Special 14 karat gold. The pen is 5 1/8 inches long.
