This is a Wahl Model 421A Check Design gold filled medium clip fountain pen c. 1925. It is the second longest pen at 4 7/8 inches, of the two sizes of clip metal pens with the engine turned Check Design, a repeating panel of checks in a line pattern on the cap and barrel. The pattern is called Unique in the 1921 catalog, and Check from 1922 onward. Pens with this design have black ebonite sections. The barrel has a blank for engraving in one of the panels, as shown. It features a Number 2 14 karat gold nib stamped Wahl 14K. This pens dates c. 1925 because the WAHL name stamp is on the tab of the clip. Model 421 came a choice of silver filled, 12 karat yellow gold filled, sterling silver, or 14 karat green gold fill. Matching Eversharp pencils were available.
