Re: Joan M custom Nakaya fountain pen
The "Joan M" model is just a short version of the classical Aka-Tamenuri, now called "Portable". More than twenty years ago, I bought the Aka-Tamenuri model, but I found it a little unwieldly and asked Nakata-san if a short version could be made for an easier daily usage. At that moment, all the Urushi models were long. He said the section would be too short and too uncomfortable to write with. I made a "model" of this short version with other pens, suggested a shape for the new section and after a few months I got this pen. I showed it to the Pentracers, it pleased and for a few years it appeared in the Nakaya catalog with the name "Joan M. model". It was later the first Portable model. After many years of wandering, I felt nostalgic of Pentrace and opened this selfish thread... Both Nakayas have been treated lovingly and have aged wonderfully. Their color has deepened and they seem even shinier than new. Both have flexible fine nibs, and after so many years write wonderfully. I use Aurora Black Ink with the short one and Omas Roma 2000 with the long one. I bought also the Platinum Pigmented Ink and used it for a short time but I got a little afraid of clogging the pen some day. The blackness of Aurora Black is very similar. When the Omas Roma 2000 appeared I liked it so much that I bought five bottles. I have two of them still.
