dog heavy bleeding

i have a 9 1/2 year old female retiever who has started bleeding from the vagina quite heaverly. it lasts for a couple of days then stops then starts a couple of days later. i thought she may be going through menopause but after reading you site a guess thats not the case.
Any Ideas???
