Hey Joanne, I just "inherited" a female dog about 2 weeks ago and 3 days after we got her she went into heat. At first I thought she was bleeding from a cut, as she wasn't displaying any odd behaviors, but after looking her over and finding no outward signs of hurt, I came to the conclusion that it had to be her cycle. I'm new to this too (as I've had cats all my life), and from the sites I've checked out so far, it looks like this stage lasts about 3 weeks. My dog has been sleeping much of the time as well, so I would hazard a guess that this is fairly normal (think of how you feel when it's "that time of the month"!) ;-) If you're worried, you can always call the vet and ask them a few questions to make sure...
