Posted by Ben on June 26, 2001, 13:30:50 A bit of kick ass rock is fine.. but a whole night of Therapy, Rage Against the Machine etc is not what I want. The dance floor is just reduced to a load of beered-up jocks bumping into each other for the fun of it. Oh.. and since when were No Doubt a good band worthy of Phantom endorsement. Where is a bit of good indie..one of the DJs is alright .. the other transforms Whelans into a bad night at Fibber McGees. What ever happened to good indie/alternative pop...do all songs have to be rocky 'crowd pleasers'..it gets really boring. And while i ranting..ill apologise later..do you always have to play the obvious songs. Why not 'This is a low' by blur 'waterfall' by the stone roses instead of the big singles. Why not some bjork, pj harvey, belle and seb, suede, lo-fis, spirtualised, badly drawn boy, pulp, beck, ride, charlantans, breeders, orbital, massive attack etc etc. I don't mind if I not into everything..just as long its not predictabel and doesn't sound like the greatest drive rock album in the would...ever. One of these days I'm going to hear stone temple pilots followed by semisonic and crap myself with anger in the middle of the dancefloor. PS sorry for the above rant..its still the best club in town (but lets be honest the competitions not up to much)
Its been said before, but whats the story with the music policy at Whelans on a Thursday night. Sometimes its alright..but often its crap, and far worse than what Phantom usually play. I though it was meant to be a indie/alternative night..not the inbred cousin of Bruxelles rock bar.
