Just returned from Rome where I had the most strangest and exciting sighting I've ever had. I visited the Vatican and did a tour of the Bascilla, (which was amazing even for someone like myself who is very cynical of organised religion). When it was over I spent some time in St Peters Square and people watched for a while. Among the many denominations of religious types there was a group of about 5 or 6 nuns in the full regalia that they wear, wandering about and get this: two of them were smoking pipes. One had it lit already, the other I watched light it using 2 matches. They were both about 30-35 years old, one was very average in looks and the other wasn't bad. The pipes were of average style and look, and the nuns seemed to be oblivious of the strangeness of the situation, and smoked like it was the most normal thing in the world. I watched for quite a while, and am slightly ashamed to say that I stalked them for a bit.
This is only the second sighting in my life, the first was about 15 years ago when I was at school, we did a trip to an English civil war re-enactment show where there were many people dressed in period costume re-enacting scenes from the era. There where many women filling various roles such as armour making, nursing and weaving and I witnessed three women on seperate occasions smoking clay pipes. Two were middle aged but one was very pretty, of about 25 years old, with long curly hair, puffing away as she made dyes for clothing. I stared for maybe too long and probably made her very worried! I often think of her and wonder if she favoured the pipe when she wasn't playing her role.
I would love to hear of other peoples sightings, but please be truthful, don't make them up.
