Back to the front page and rules...
Posted by robW Lots of brown paper on windows and paint peeling from window ceils are the order of the day. A cajun chef has opened a restaurant in the old Condor--he had a shop in New Orleans but that is gone so this is the chef's new home. I hate to be rude to the guy but anyone can get better catfish at any roadside catfish stand in Oklahoma. $50 cheaper, too. Oh well. Where is Carol Doda when you need her? No avian flu in Chinatown yet, but then again they did stop selling chickens in a cage a long time ago. The Haight still isn't what it used to be, but I've given up on that--I mean, when will it get back to the Haight I remember in 1969? Probably never. Sheesh, even Grace Slick has moved to LA. All channeling efforts to bring back Jerry Garcia have proved fuitless, so what do you expect? Magnolia Thunderpussy to rise from her grave? The Safeway down at Fishermen's Wharf had to close their fish counter, such as it pathetically was, for a few months because their fishmonger went to work for that upscale meat market down at the Ferry Building (where I was able to find a capon for a dinner fest, thank you very much whatever-that-meatmarket-name-was). You will be pleased to note that the Fishermen's Wharf Safeway did do a remodel job to compete with Trader Joe's, but the remodel job was fleeting at best, and all it really did was provide an excuse to raise their prices yet again. The Embarcadero Cinema did a *pun* Landmark business last weekend for "Brokeback Mountain" (a French film [i.e., a depressing film] made in Canada about Wyoming [for economic reasons made in Canada] by a Chinese director [a new, great interpretor of the American experience, according to Hollywood...a little Feng Shui is good, I guess]. Tad's is still there (like Original Joe's, which will always be there), although I am not certain what they are doing with that building on the corner where Jax's was...I think they are trying to make it look the same but different. The same old city thing. Adobe has finished off Macromedia, so I guess we can all say good bye to the old days of Multimedia-Gulch on South of Market. Most of us say good-riddance....maybe now we can go back to the sleeze bars, warehouses, and holes-in-the-wall, but that might be asking for too much. Nah, that won't change for another 20 years at least, so I probably won't be around for that phase of the San Francisco experience..... You will be pleased to know that the cab drivers are still hateful critics of the system: one the other day reminded me of you. I left him with the old "love it or leave it" crappy response as I was getting out of the cab, and he *OF COURSE* told me that if he had the money he would leave it. I gave him a $10 tip to help him on his way. In short, David, San Francisco is muddling through. I can console myself that at least I live in one of the *LAST* cities on earth that is tearing down freeways and freeway entrances in order to build boulevards. Small consolation, I guess. Eventually I, too, shall leave this city (for a second time, in my case). And, in my case, I shall probably buy a patch of land in Eureka, because the weather suits me there. San Francisco, that old makeup-painted b###h of a whore (whore of a b###h?), does wish you well--in between soliciting the next customer, of course. One must pay attention to the next customer.... Best..... robW
