"Brokeback" wasn't my favorite movie of '05, but I believe it has value beyond the scenery and the cowboy life, both of which, like you, I don't think are good enough reasons to see a movie.

The movie's theme, and the reason why it's important, is the closet, and how back in a time and a place when it was almost inescapable, it twisted people's lives. The necessity of the keeping one's sexual tastes hidden still exists in many classes and communities today, and still ruins lives. By showing this process (admittedly in an extreme example of both time and place, the Rockies and Texas in the '60s and '70s), maybe some more minds will change, or at least be encouraged to think.

"Transamerica" was more entertaining than "Brokeback," and has its own messages. I recommend it more highly for those of us who have already fought the closet battle.
