Something must be wrong with the infrastructure in your area. I've had internet via cable in Charlotte, Raleigh, and now Schenectady and it's rock-solid reliable. The longest outage I've ever had was from an ice storm in Raleigh - so I'd guess over 6.5 years - maybe a total of 3 days outage.
