I have also found on occassion that the cable modem can be an issue. Sometimes cable companies will give you some cheesy off brand that was cheap to them but you are better off getting a good brand name like a Motorola Surfboard. I too have had good success for a number of years with cable modem service, even in podunk southwestern VA where not much else worked as reliably.

: Maybe it is a local thing. The big
: problem is not so much the long
: outages but the perpetual short
: ones (even though last night's
: post was about a longer one). Many
    : times they're a minute or less,
: but they happen all the time
    : (multiple times a day) and they're
: just long enough to drop the VPN
: connection Mark uses for work,
: etc. Our DSL was never that flaky.

: Something must be wrong with the
: infrastructure in your area. I've
: had internet via cable in
    : Charlotte, Raleigh, and now
    : Schenectady and it's rock-solid
: reliable. The longest outage I've
: ever had was from an ice storm in
    : Raleigh - so I'd guess over 6.5
    : years - maybe a total of 3 days
    : outage.
