    It's pretty outrageous. Thankfully, it's attracted the attention of the ACLU and a lawsuit is in the works. Unfortunately, there's enough just plain idiotic things that shock me by standing up in court that I can't say I'm 100% certain the law will get thrown out.

    The municipality in question claims such permits are common in the St. Louis metro area. Wonder how many of them attempt to micromanage their residents family situations like that.

    I also wonder how common such occupancy permits are nationwide. I never heard of such things until hearing this story. All the places I've lived, an occupancy permit happens about once in the life of a structure, as the result of it passing final inspection and being certified for occupancy.

    That's even the case when I moved to California, which is a pretty heavily regulated place. All I had to do was sign a lease and hand the landlord a check; none of this business of trotting down to city hall and plunking down $50 for a permit to live there.
