I knew someone was going to call me on that.
That was just the test run to make sure our second-hand mower worked OK. Rest assured that today's actual mowing involved proper shoes and a dust mask.
My mom never supervised my mowing, though. I never mowed at home, as my dad was one of those Hank Hill types who never let anyone touch his yard. All of my childhood mowing was at my grandmother's house, and she wasn't big on safety measures. When I was eleven or twelve years old, she tried to get me to replace light switches without shutting off the breakers.
This was the same grandmonther who used to paint her upholstered furniture (the upholstered part, not the trim) and glue lamps to tables. I loved her, but she was quite clearly out of her mind...
