I thought David mentioned here that he tried to order DSL but it's not available in his neighborhood. Unless he's in a _very_ unusual situation, getting service from Alltel instead of Bellsouth isn't going to make any difference in this regard, as the competing carriers typically lease both lines and CO space from the old monopoly carrier.
I have cable broadband and it's been plenty reliable, but I live in a West Coast state that almost never sees thunderstorms.
Infrastructures should be designed to withstand normal weather events. It sounds inexcusable for a thunderstorm in a normally thundery place like NC to cause so much trouble for a cable network. Then again, I've experienced more than one cable company with inexcusably bad so-called "service."
