This could be the solution. Once a party gets a certain percentage of the popular vote (I think it's 10%), they get federal funding in the next election cycle. That helps even the field. You note that it would cost Democrats the election. True, but if you want to see a three-party system, that's the price we pay. So in exchange for one more term of Republican presidencies, we get a three-party system. To some, that might be worth it. And that is what I'm thinking is pretty awesome: we are at the point where we can make a political sacrifice and actually change the system; we won't just make a sacrifice and get nothing in return.
