maybe Bush did want to meet with Iran, but Iran wouldn't meet with us because it would increase the legitimacy of a President who is very unpopular with the American people.
honestly, I thought that McCain had one good point when he said that, but then I realized that not only is it willful ignorance and naivety to pretend that the leader of a country is not legitimately in control of that country if he is unpopular with the people of that country, but if you decide to subscribe to that philosophy, doesn't it mean that Bush's leadership is illegitimate based on his own unpopularity among the American people?
And even if you don't agree with me, who would you suggest would be an appropriate person to meet with to represent Iran? The answer would have to be either 'nobody at all' or it would be someone who wouldn't even matter. it would just be a formal and meaningless political act.
