Help in saving my relationship

I met a really great guy a few months back. It's been kind of a whirlwind as we have been together every single day and night since the day we met. It's been really great and we get along so well. Things have been moving very fast, we moved in together quickly, and discuss the future. THEN last night he says we should break up because he is afraid he is going to (emotionally) hurt me in the end as he has that pattern in relationships and that he is trying to be unselfish and let me go, that I deserve better, etc. He was crying during the whole conversation and it makes no sense. It is a 180 from the past 2 months so it really caught me off guard. It's as if he is afraid now that he has something good going on. I don't know what to do. I don't want to give up as it has been the best relationship I have ever had. I would love some advice.
