Here's what Boardhost says in their info screen: "Boardhost password protection allows you to require a valid username and password for your message board's users. If you choose to install password protection, you will have the option of requiring a username and password only to post to your board, or to require a username and password to view your message board. After you install password protection, this page will be replaced by a page that will allow you to fully manage your users and password protection settings, and add an unlimited number of authorized password protection users to your board. You will also have access to our auto-registration system. The auto registration system allows you to automate username and password setup. Your visitors will fill out a short application and then will either be instantly added to your board, or sent to you for approval before being added to your board. Password Protection is not installed on your message board." ***** It seems that everyone must have his own password if we go that route. I intend to let the voting continue on for a while to see where people stand on the issue. If the majority wish passwords, then I'll try it. I think it could be too cumbersome and ultimately negative to a certain degree for AC Comics if the process of dealing with this Board were to become tedious for the users. Having everyone have his or her own unique password could quickly become unworkable for any of several reasons. A Universal Password, if one were possible, prominently displayed would be visible also to the spammers if they're actually loading the page and not using some sort of automatic "message board spammer" application. One such as you describe would work fine, with the password not visible on the Board. The "auto-registration system" mentioned in the above quote may also have its loopholes that spammers could take advantage of. I don't like having to "review" all the messages posted here and I'm saddened by the need to go this route. I've always had "Administrative Notifications" turned on which emailed me whenever anyone posted a message and have tried my best to manually ban the IP addresses of the spammers and remove their posts, but occasionally one seems to get through or I may not be able to get to the Board or check my email on a daily basis. It's a lot of work to be Johnny-On-the-Spot and it's very embarrasing to have Mr. Black email me and tell me there's some sex spam on the Board. Here's the rest of the info about passwords from the Boardhost Admin page: "Password Protection Auto Registration Password Protection Auto Registration allows you to automate the password request process for your message board. When enabled, links will be added to your message board which lead potential users of your board to a registration system. Users will be asked for their name, email address, and a username and a password for your board. Users can also be asked up to three questions which you may specify. After a user fills out the registration form, we will send a link with a random code to the email address specified by the user, in order to verify their email address. After the user is verified, one of two things will take place, depending on your preferences: An email message containing registration details will be sent to you, along with a link allowing you to approve or reject this user. The user will be automatically added to your message board's password protection users, and you will receive an email message notifying you of the user's details. Once the user is added, they will receive an additional email message confirming their details. You may also specify email address bans, which will not allow a user with a matching email address to register for access to your message board. Note: If you are using "post only" password protection, a link to the registration system will be shown on the main page of your message board. If, however, you are using "access" password protection, the registration link will only be shown after a user fails to enter a correct username and password or clicks "Cancel" in the popup box requesting their username and password." ***** I could incorporate your idea into the "auto-registration" system by asking applicants to answer up to three questions I specify. Should someone answer in such a way that demonstrates some very basic knowledge of Bill Black, Paragon, Femforce or AC, then I can assume that person is bona fide. This may be the best route. Let's see how the voting goes, and based on that I'll either let things stand or try the password thing out. Thoughts, anyone?

: Bob,
:
: Is there any way to set a universal password
: for anyone who wants to post? I was just
: thinking, you could put a password hint
: right under your name at the top of the
: Board and then have a password that any fan
: of AC Comics or Femforce would know or be
: able to find out. A spammer who is spamming
: all kinds of boards and doesn't know
: Femforce from Bowflex isn't going to take
: the time to go learn the information needed
: to know the password.
:
: For instance, you could put the following:
: "Password Hint"
: "The first name of the leader of the
: Femforce in her civilian identity."
:
: Password - Joan
:
: Only the people who know that or are willing
: to take the time to figure it out would be
: able to post. As long as it's something
: fairly easy, it won't deter anybody from
: posting except people who have no interest
: in doing anything but spamming or
: advertising sex sites.
:
: Just an idea. Don't even know if it's
: workable. Whatever you decide will be fine,
: I'm sure.

Good suggestionss, Paul. How have you been, by the way? How's married life treating you? Mine's not so hot anymore. Twenty-five years and now it seems to have been all for naught. In any case . . .

A Universal Password such as you describe, Paul, would do the trick nicely and I wish it were possible. If the Board were a paid board access to even viewing it could be password protected. As it stands, the free board only allows password protection for posting privileges.
*****
It doesn't say how things would be worked if "auto-registration" were not turned on. I'm assuming that I'd somehow be notified, either in the Admin area or by email, when someone "requested" a password to be registered. Then I'd have to manually allow them or not, as above.
