My belief is that, these days for any planned visit, inward or outward, their minders consult and take soundings about acceptable gifts.
Sometimes a token like a framed and autographed portrait will do plus a quiet donation to some cause which we don't get to hear about..
Also, those pieces of jewellery are mere trinkets to some guests and hosts.
