But it seems to me that, when the current Duchess wore the jewel in 2003, it was fixed to her suit coat by a central pin mechanism.
The pin can be glimpsed towards the top right in the image below.
In the image below, the pin can be seen on the right side as well as where the coat edges have slightly parted.
If the jewel was worn as separate clips I would imagine that the edges of the coat would have parted more as the Duchess moved. Instead they seem to remain together and both sides of the jewel remain in alignment.
If the jewel is 2 separate clips then they are held in alignment by a frame running around the back of the diamond sections to which a central pin is attached. I am also puzzled by how the pins by which clips are normally attached to garments etc would be hidden in a brooch with such a large open centre. Of course such pins could have been permanently removed if there were 2 clips.
For some examples of how joining mechanisms work on clips see https://www.langantiques.com/vintage-jewelry/pins-and-brooches/small-art-deco-diamond-double-clip-brooch.html and https://www.langantiques.com/vintage-jewelry/pins-and-brooches/art-deco-diamond-and-colorful-gem-double-clip-brooch.html https://www.langantiques.com/vintage-jewelry/pins-and-brooches/art-deco-platinum-diamond-double-clip-brooch-1.html
: That's OK Barbara. There is a pic where a
: distinct gap is visible at one end I think.
