According to Christie's information, the brooch was made by Italian Crown jeweller Musy circa 1860, and is reported to have been worn by Queen Margherita and Queen Elena of Italy. It was later presented to Princess Marie-JosÚ by her parents-in-law King Victor-Emmanuel III and Queen Elena of Italy as a wedding gift.
I have not found any pictures of Princess/Queen Marie-JosÚ wearing the brooch when she lived in Italy. But she wore it regularly for royal gala events in her early exile years, mostly in the 1950s/1960s:
- 1955 pre-wedding reception for Princess Maria-Pia of Italy and Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia:
- 1960 pre-wedding reception for King Baudouin of Belgium and Do˝a Fabiola de Mora y Aragon:
- 1962 pre-wedding reception for Prince Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Sofia of Greece:
Apparently, it was later given or bequeathed to Queen Marie-JosÚ's youngest daughter, Princess Marie-Gabrielle of Italy, who had it sold at auction by Christie's on 13th June, 2007, along with several other of her royal jewellery heirlooms... :
