I must say that I don't quite get the policy of honour distribution here. From before the Grand Duke has the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (2005) and of the Order of Saint James with the Sword (2010). Then yesterday, instead of proceeding to the next order in precedence (The Order of Avis) the Grand Duke seems to have been awareded the Order of Liberty, which is in fact lower precedence than the Order of Infante D. Henrique. Instead the Hereditary Grand Duke is awareded the Order of Avis. Of course, the Grand Duke received the Grand Cross with Collar while the Hereditary Grand Duke got the Grand Cross (without the collar).
Then the Grand Duchess has now been awarded the Order of Infante D. Henrique when she already had received the higher Order of Christ back in 2005. So it looks like both the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess have been "downgraded". Naturally, since they have received these orders from the visiting president they have worn the newly awarded ones and not the higher ranked ones that they already have.
By the way, does anybody know whether it is correct to wear both the sash and collar at the same time with all the Portuguese orders? I know that for instance in the case of the Norwegian Order of St Olav one either wears the collar or the sash - not both at the same time.
Having said that I must add that they all looked splendid!
